A Brown Street man was arrested in Gorham after leading police on a chase while he had an infant in the car.
Westbrook Police Capt. Tom Roth said Jason D. Conlogue, 21, of Brown Street was arrested after a low-speed chase that began last Tuesday afternoon on Quimby Avenue and continued through Westbrook, ending on Route 25 in Gorham.
The incident began when police received a call from the Quimby Avenue resident who was taking care of Conlogue’s child reporting he was trying to take the baby from the house. Roth said police went to the scene to speak to Conlogue and when they approached him, he fled with the child in his car.
Police followed Conlogue’s vehicle through the surrounding neighborhoods at what Roth described as a low speed. Eventually, Conlogue turned onto Route 25 and headed into Gorham. As Conlogue headed into Gorham, he called police and told them he had a knife in the car and he threatened to use it.
The chase continued into Gorham and it stopped when Conlogue’s car was disabled after he ran over a spike mat placed in the road by the Gorham police. After Conlogue’s car came to a stop, Roth said officers converged on the vehicle and safely removed the child from the car and arrested Conlogue. Police did not find a knife in the vehicle, but Roth said police took a screwdriver from Conlogue during the arrest.
Conlogue was charged with aggravated reckless conduct, terrorizing, eluding police, passing a police roadblock, criminal trespass and a probation violation. Roth said all of the charges against Conlogue came because he attempted to elude police and that there was nothing that legally prohibited him from taking the child from the babysitter’s house. He is being held at the Cumberland County Jail on $50,000 property or $25,000 cash bail.
