The School Committee will consider tonight a couple of revisions to the school policy that dictates how to respond to bomb threats.
Superintendent Stan Sawyer said the school Policy Committee met to review the policy after a series of bomb threats at Wescott Junior High School last spring. A couple of parents had complained that the school had not notified them of the bomb threats.
Sawyer said one of the amendments to the policy dictates that the School Department will notify parents if children are sent home due to a bomb threat, moved to an alternate location or evacuated from the building for an extended period of time. Parents would be notified by mail. Another amendment directs school administrators to notify School Committee members.
Sawyer said in the event of a bomb threat, the most senior building administrator, School Department administrator, the highest-ranking police officer and firefighter would meet at the location of the threat. If any one of them believed the threat were credible, the building would be evacuated.
Sawyer said the amendments were not a departure from the way the department has handled bomb threats in the past. He said they simply put in writing the procedures he has followed in the past.
“We had a good discussion, and everyone felt that the procedure used in Westbrook is a great procedure,” said Sawyer.
The School Committee will meet tonight at 7 p.m. in room 114 of Westbrook High School.
