This summer, John and Brielle Merrifield of Reserve Street set out to ride from Maine to Virginia Beach on a tandem bicycle.

The trip had to be cut short after Brielle became ill in Washington, D.C., but now the father and daughter team are back in Maine, and a banquet is being held in their honor.

The banquet will take place at Chicky’s Fine Diner on Bridge Street from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 19. Called the “Final East Coast Bicycle Ride Banquet,” Merrifield said proceeds from the evening will be donated to the Joshua Merrifield Scholarship Foundation. The Merrifields set up the foundation in honor of their son and brother Joshua, who took his own life in March of 2004.
