The three men charged in connection with the beating death of a Westbrook man pled not guilty on Friday.

At an arraignment in Cumberland County Superior Court, Wade DePalma, 19, of Bridge Street; Nicholas Lavigne, 19, of Pierce Street and Alexander Layug, 18, of Massachusetts Avenue, Portland, all entered pleas of not guilty to charges of manslaughter before Superior Court Justice Robert Crowley.

The case is being prosecuted by the Maine Attorney General’s Office. Spokesman Bill Stokes said Prosecutor Fernand LaRochelle would be prosecuting the case for the Attorney General’s office.

Stokes said no court date has been set in this case. He said at the hearing on Friday Crowley gave both sides 60 days to file discovery motions. After the discovery process is completed, Crowley will set a trial date.

The three men were arrested on Aug. 5 in connection with the death of Douglas Wilcox, 34, of Glenwood Avenue, on July 7.

DePalma, Lavigne and Layug were charged after a state police investigation concluded that Wilcox died as the result of injuries received in a fight with the three men on July 3.

Police said Wilcox had a verbal altercation with DePalma, Lavigne and Layug at Brown and North streets on the afternoon of July 3. Police said they were not sure of the relationship between the four men, but believed they might have been previously acquainted in some way.

Later that day, Wilcox confronted the three men in front of a River Street residence. The fight moved down to Brown Street, in front of the Skybox tavern, where the assault took place. Police said there was no connection between the tavern and the altercation.

Wilcox was initially taken to Maine Medical Center on July 3 to be treated for his injuries. He stayed in Maine Medical Center for only a short time before signing himself out of the hospital against his doctor’s wishes.

On July 6, Wilcox was discovered unconscious in the shower by family members. He was taken back to Maine Medical Center where he died early the next morning.

After police received the results of an autopsy that showed Wilcox died as the result of his injuries, the state police met with the Attorney General’s Office, and the case was brought before a Cumberland County grand jury on Aug. 2. Police said the grand jury indicted DePalma, Lavigne and Layug on Aug. 3, and the arrest warrants for the three men were issued on Aug. 4.

DePalma, Lavigne and Layug were taken to the Cumberland County Jail in Portland. All three men were released on $100,000 property or $10,000 cash bail on Aug. 5. At their arraignment on Friday, Crowley ordered all three defendants to have no contact with each other while they remain free on bail.

Stokes would not comment on the possibility of a plea agreement in this case. He said his office typically has discussions with defense counsel in all cases, but those conversations are kept confidential until after an agreement has been reached.
