Down 3-0 Sunday and looking at a trip to the loser’s bracket, Westbrook’s 11-year-old Little Leaguers staged a four-run fifth inning to down Scarborough in the District 6 Tournament in Windham.

The 4-3 win earned Westbrook a match-up with powerful Yarmouth, the defending state champion. The two lone unbeaten teams in the tournament were to battle Tuesday (after this press deadline).

“I knew we could do this as a team,” said second baseman and leadoff hitter Andrew McCarthy after the Sunday win. “I knew we wouldn’t go down like that.”

McCarthy had three singles in the game, including an RBI-hit in the four-run fifth. Jake Limanni, Mike Rioux-Pena, Trevor Bates and Matt Moody also had base hits that inning.

Meanwhile pitcher Joe Dvilinsky pitched a complete game victory and seemed to get stronger as the game entered the later innings.

His only bad frame was a three-run Scarborough third inning, Ben Wessel’s two-run triple the big blow in that rally.

“They didn’t give up,” said Coach Bob Dvilinsky. “They played hard all game long.”

But the coach said, before the game, his players didn’t look ready.

“We had terrible warm-ups,” the coach said. “And we kicked the ball around early. But we got stronger as the game went along.”

Pena noted that his coach taped his fingers with white tape before the game, “and for some reason that makes us lucky,” he said.

Ryan Shute added, “I think our hitting is good, but our fielding could improve a little bit.”

Andrew Duncanson said he felt good about this team.

“We never die,” he said. “We have confidence in ourselves.”

Coach Jim Cronin’s Scarborough team came back strong Monday, earning an eight-inning, 1-0 win over South Portland American in the tough loser’s bracket. They were to play again Wednesday against South Portland National.

The finals of the loser’s bracket is Friday (game time at 5:30) and the first round between the two finalists is set for Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. If a second game between the two survivors is necessary, it will be played Sunday at 1 p.m.
