The attorney for the town of Gorham has notified a contractor that the town wants a new boiler at Baxter Memorial Library.
In a letter in March, William Dale notified Ledgewood Construction of Portland that the town is rejecting the boiler system that they installed at the library on South Street two years ago because it’s not functioning properly. The town is demanding a replacement system.
In a report on Jan. 5, Resource Systems Engineering of Brunswick, which did sound level measurements for the town, said the boiler was noisier than it should be.
Burleigh Loveitt, chairman of the town council, said town officials are working to come to a solution that will be in the best interest of the town. “We’re wrangling over a solution,” Loveitt said.
Dale wrote that everyone involved has acted in good faith in an effort to get the boiler system to operate properly, but the boiler is not. Dale said this is best time of the year to replace the boiler. He assumed that the manufacturer would stand behind its product.
Adam Ogden of 65 South St., a neighbor of the library, said that the boiler was “rattling” his house all hours of the day and night. Ogden said the boiler is costing the town money because it is not burning fuel inefficiently.
He said the town is doing what it can and the situation is unfortunate for everyone. “It’s destroyed the enjoyment and quiet of our property,” Ogden said.
Loveitt said the town is hoping that the town will be able to resolve the problem in an amicable manner. “We aim to have it resolved before the heating season,” Loveitt said.
