RECORD: 9-3

COACH: Bill Shardlow

HIGHLIGHT: The highlight was winning five 3-2 matches, including one over Scarborough in mid season. We had a great group of girls who were mentally tough and focused for the whole year.

MOST IMPROVED: Alyse Bartholomew

COACH’S COMMENT: “I don’t think anyone expected us to be as successful as we were and that’s a tribute to their ability to stay focused in matches. It was a fun group of kids. As enjoyable a group of kids as I’ve had coaching. We tried to have an intelligent approach and have them learn the game.”

Boys tennis

RECORD: 13-2

COACH: Wayne Martin

HIGHLIGHT: The Windham boys came out of the gate as one of the top teams in Western Class A this season, winning their first six matches of the spring without losing even an individual match. Deering eventually got the best of the Eagles, first in early May, then in the Western Class A finals at Bates College. Before bowing out, Windham won playoff matches against Scarborough and Kennebunk. Also number one singles player Derek Stevenson made the trip to the individual state tournament.

Boys track

RECORD: The Eagles beat 10 different teams throughout the season and in the Southwestern meet.

COACH: Jeff Riddle

HIGHLIGHT: A highlight to be able to actually play chess at a track meet and put people in the right events and think of team scores. We hadn’t been able to do that in past years. We also took first place in the high jump (Greg Swander, Geoff Debree and Adam Linden) and the javelin, (Pat Hanson, Jesse Woodman and Nick Diamon) at the Westbrook relays. Woodman’s effort in the javelin took him to the New England meet.

SENIORS: Isaac Shreves, Brandon Mohn, Geoff Debree, Zach Goodwin, Mike Barr, Dayne Varney, Pat Hanson, Kevin Mirecki, Greg Swander, Anthony Kimball, Jeremy Bragdon, Nick Diamon, Ben Carlin, Jeff Springer and Stewart McCallister (Manager)

MVP: Jesse Woodman, Pat Hanson, Dayne Varney, Geoff Debree (4 x 400 relay) plus were the biggest point scorers every meet.

COACH’S AWARD: Dylan Janosik

MOST IMPROVED: Isaac Shreves

COACH’S COMMENT: “It’s been really exciting to see this program grow and see the positive attitudes of these kids. We’ve always been about setting individual goals and there was significant individual improvement this season. We not only won as a team, but we also came out with more personal bests than we’ve had in the past.”

Girls track

RECORD: Finished second in all five regular season meets

COACH: Melissa Holmes-Perkins

HIGHLIGHT: Coming in second at every meet and having nine girls qualify for the state meet. Stephanie Shepard – our fabulously fast freshman – came in third in both the 100 and 200 at the states.

SENIORS: Kristan Brown, Gill Cook, Kate DeCosta, Brianna Greene, Kim Johnson, Randi Varney and Amber Wing.

MVP: Vanessa Rallis and Danielle Smith.

COACH’S AWARD: Krissy Varney

COACH’S COMMENT: “I love these girls! They’ve decided that they can indeed take this program to the next level and be more competitive. We worked really hard this season – we all improved at something – and we all had fun together. It was a dreamy first season for me as coach and it makes me very excited for next year.”

Baseball

RECORD: 8-8

COACH: Scott Fennessy

HIGHLIGHT: The Windham baseball team made a strong run in Western Class A, especially early on, starting off 6-3. The Eagles also entered the post-season on a high note, defeating Scarborough 5-2 in the preliminary round of the Western Class A playoffs. Windham finally lost at Hadlock Field to Deering in the Western Class A quarterfinals.

Softball

RECORD: 8-8

COACH: Bob Blanchard

HIGHLIGHT: A gallant showing in the post season, with wins over Cheverus (3-1) and Portland (5-1) capped a strong run by a team that had a lot of newcomers step up. The season ended with a 1-0 loss to South Portland in the Western Maine semifinal round. The win over Portland, the defending state champs, saw Windham at its best. Pitcher Ally Noble was her usual tough self on the mound and Windham’s offense – led by Jen McGintee, Darcey Webster, Ashley Corkum, Taylor Graves, Michelle Nappi – scrapped, bunted, ran and stole their way to five runs.
