Coach’s comments: “I’m proud of how my kids battled this year. We had an excellent season. We played Gorham tough three times, but we just didn’t get the big hit when we needed it. We had high expectations for ourselves this year, and other than not winning the state championship, we met them all.”

Coach’s comments “(Jackie) pitched her heart out. The defense behind her gave her more confidence to throw strikes. The kids all battled hard. I’m damn proud of them. We should be back (next year).”

Girls lacrosse

Coach: Sarah Kinsella

Record: 9-6

Season highlight: The 8-7 loss to North Yarmouth Academy. The Capers were ahead for most of the game in what coach Sarah Kinsella calls, “probably our best game of the season.” The game served as a turning point for the team. “We really came out of our shell, and the girls came together,” said Kinsella.

Seniors: Chelsea Kotch, Kristina Scontras, Kate Barton, Jenny Croteau.

Coach’s comment: “Basically I came in not knowing what to expect. It was a matter of getting the team together, and that started happening in the middle of the season. We made the semi-finals with just four seniors. It was all heart. They worked hard and put in all the extra time. I’m excited for next year, when I’ll have nine seniors.”

Boys track

Coach: David Weatherbie

Record: 10-2

Season highlight: The Capers won the Class C state championship for the first time since 1984, and they did it by setting three school records along the way. Keegan Toot set records in the pole vault and 110 high hurdles, while the 4×800 relay team set another record.

Seniors: Keegan Toot

MVP(S): Keegan Toot and Kevin Harrison.

Coach’s comments: “We were thrilled. Our goal was to win the state championship, and we did. We felt like we had all-state performers in Keegan Toot and Kevin Harrison, and we did a good job filling in around them. Everything just fell into place, and we had the best day when it counted. You train them for that, and they came through.”

Girls track

Coach: David Weatherbie

Record: 9-3

Season highlight: The Capers were runners up at the state meet, finishing second to a team that just had more girls. Said Weatherbie: “We just couldn’t match their depth.” The Capers did set six new school records, though. Elise Moody-Roberts set records in the 3,200 and 1,600 meter runs, while Claire Egan did the same in the 300 hurdles and 400 dash. There was also the 4×800 relay and the 4×400 relay.

Coach’s award: Dana Riker

Coach’s comments: “We had a great season to finish second in the state. That was a tremendous accomplishment. This was the best season of track and field in Cape Elizabeth high school history.”

Boys lacrosse

Coach: Ben Raymond

Record: 15-3

Season highlight: The Capers beat Yarmouth, 7-6, to win the Class A state title.

Seniors: Dan Rautenberg, Ron Kelton, Mark Russell, Anthony Struzziero, Ryan Foley, Ben McKinney, Jeff Croteau, Brian Holden, Zach Nedwell, Dave Bagdasarian, Justin Tate, Jacob Metzger, Andrew Lamberth, Steve St. John, Brett Brown.

MVPs: Brian Holden, Brett Brown, Dan Rautenberg.

Coach’s award: Ben McKinney

Coach’s comment: “It was outstanding. The kids played very well, and they continued to get better as the season went on. They played their best game of the season on the last day of the year, and that’s what we’re looking for.”

Girls tennis

Coach: Jamyn Mooney

Record: 13-3

Season Highlights: Beating York in the tournament. York had won an early-season matchup, but the Capers buckled down and got the job done.

Seniors: Monica Nicholas, Kaley Skapinsky, Corinne Earnshaw

MVP: Kaley Skapinsky

Comments on Season: “My first year as the girls varsity coach was a wonderful experience. The girls on the team were hard working, competitive and fun girls, which really made the year enjoyable. Our season ended in the Western Maine Finals to Falmouth. Every girl played their heart out and left everything on the court, which is all I could ask of them. I look forward to another successful and enjoyable season.”

Boys tennis

Record 15-1, Class B runners up

Highlight Defeated Oak Hill in the Western Maine Class B quarterfinals, beat Yarmouth in the Western semi-finals and beat Falmouth in the Western Maine finals (and twice during the regular season), before losing to Camden Hills for the state championship.
