Once again, the Maine Legislature has set a new standard for hypocrisy. Under the pretense of protecting public health, these noble public servants have voted to double the state cigarette tax.

Given that smoking is such a health risk, why not ban the sale of cigarettes altogether? The answer is simple; the revenue associated with this “cash cow” is just too lucrative to pass-up.

In lieu of enacting meaningful tax and spending reform, the Legislature and “Bald Archie” have resorted to what they know best; find another avenue for taxing the citizenry.

Ultimately, the blame falls squarely on “we the taxpayers.” Despite our moaning and groaning, we repeatedly cast our votes in support of the status quo.
