Despite Saturday’s scorching sun, local residents turned out to see Westbrook firefighters from the Valentine Hose Company No. 2, play a benefit softball game at Fraser Field against a team of Red Sox Alumni.
Former Red Sox pitcher Bill Lee held the spotlight, signing autographs between innings and, at one point, bounding off the mound to skillfully catch a pop-up behind his back.
Despite losing, 25-3, Capt. Gene Dunn was happy about the charitable works that will result from the money raised.
“We give most of the money back to the community,” Dunn said, “like Toys for Tots for kids in Westbrook, smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors for the elderly and underprivileged. There’s a burn camp down in Connecticut we usually give to, and various things in the community. We’ve got two scholarships it goes to every year for the high school.”
