As a candidate for school committee, I encourage people to go to the polls on June 14 and vote for the future of Windham’s schools. As both an educator and a parent, I am a strong advocate for children of all ages and backgrounds. I have a clear voice, compassion for others, and a drive to be part of a vibrant and better vision for our schools. I understand and live out daily the urgent issues facing our schools: No Child Left Behind mandates, literacy, special education, gifted education, at-risk youth, budgetary constraints, and so much more.

Growing up in rural Maine, I attended a four-room elementary schoolhouse where I first learned the value of community. I come from a long line of educators, including my mother, aunt and grandmother. My grandmother, a mathematician and a school principal, taught me the value of intellect tempered with grace, while my mother, an artist and first grade teacher, gave me the gifts of colors and creativity. I have learned more from my students and my children than I have taught, and I believe that education is at the heart of all lasting growth and positive change.

I am proud to be part of the two most rewarding occupations on earth – teacher and parent. I would be honored to represent the town by offering active listening, responsible decision-making, and thoughtful and informed dialogue. I believe that the school board should be responsive to the public it serves, and I look forward to the opportunity to make that a reality.

Thank you,

Anita S. Charles
