A former pastor of the Unitarian-Universalist Church of Westbrook is missing and presumed drowned after falling into the Kenduskeag Stream in Bangor on Sunday.

The Hampden Police said Joseph Majeau, 77, who had moved to Hampden after retiring from the Westbrook church, fell into the stream around 3:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Police said Majeau’s wife and some bystanders attempted to pull Majeau from the water, but were unsuccessful. The swift current from the rain-swollen river carried Majeau downstream toward the Penobscot River, and no trace of his body has been found.

Tug Graffam of Forest Street, who was close to Majeau from his time at the Unitarian-Universalist Church of Westbrook, said he spoke to Majeau’s wife, Sue, on Sunday afternoon. He said Sue Majeau told him she was bringing her husband, who was suffering from Parkinson’s disease, home from the hospital Sunday when they passed by the Kenduskeag Stream, which was running high from last week’s rain.

Graffam said when they returned home, Majeau told his wife he wanted to go back out and look at the water. The couple was walking alongside the water when Majeau apparently slipped and fell into the water.

Majeau was pastor of the Westbrook church for over 10 years, said Graffam, who couldn’t recall exactly when Majeau had been with the church. Dan Glover of the Westbrook Universalist Church said Majeau had been ill for quite some time and had retired from the church because of his illnesses.

The case remains under investigation by the Maine Warden Service.
