The Westbrook Police Department arrested a Lori Lane man on May 5 after it was discovered that he failed to properly register as a sex offender.
Detective Tim Gardner said John Turner, 61, of 35 Lori Lane, had been previously convicted of unlawful sexual contact with a 13-year old girl and was required by law to register with the sex offender registry.
Gardner said Turner had been living in Westbrook for at least two years, but had been using an address in Limington for a number of years. Gardner said he believed Turner was using the Limington address to avoid having leaflets distributed in his Westbrook neighborhood letting people know a sex offender was living in the neighborhood.
Maine law says sex offenders who are required to register must register with local police within 24 hours of moving into a town or city. In addition, they must provide their new address to the sex offender registry within five days.
Gardner said police found out about Turner after a police officer in York County went to make a routine check on Turner and found out from neighbors that he had not lived in Limington for some time. After determining Turner had moved to Westbrook, the officer obtained a warrant for Turner’s arrest and notified the Westbrook police.
Turner was charged with failure to update information, a class D misdemeanor, said Gardner. He said Turner is not being held and is not on probation. “He doesn’t have any restrictions in place,” said Gardner.
Detailed information on Turner along with a photo appears on the state’s sex offender registry Web site at www.informe.org/sor/.
