As part of an ongoing program to expand its network in Maine, U.S. Cellular recently added antennas to an existing tower in South Windham. The site is part of a statewide network of more than 200 U.S. Cellular towers. The new tower provides increased coverage and capacity along Routes 202 and 237 in South Windham.
“We are responsive to our customers’ needs,” said Jim Holmes, director of sales for U.S. Cellular in New England. “This part of southern Maine needed additional coverage and as a result the South Windham tower will provide better service to our customers.”
U.S. Cellular, serving Maine since 1988, is Maine’s only wireless carrier providing service throughout the entire state on its own network.
Each tower provides coverage and calling capacity for an area, called a “cell.” When a South Windham area resident makes a call, the U.S. Cellular phone transmits the caller’s voice to the nearest tower. The tower sends the call through the telephone network where it is delivered to the receiver.
“The number and location of cell towers makes a big difference in call quality and clarity,” added Holmes.
