People make a school system great. I have for many years realized that the most important element of a school system is the quality and dedication of our teachers, administrators and staff. We have been very fortunate in Westbrook to have exceptional personnel.
As more of the “baby boomers” reach retirement age, Westbrook and other Maine school systems will continue to retire more and more employees each year. This is going to create a high void in leadership and in my estimation adversely affect the quality of education. Even though Westbrook continues to hire exceptional new employees, who have great potential, I remain concerned about the large number of employees retiring annually.
At this time of year, it is sad to say goodbye to many wonderful employees and friends who are retiring from education. This year’s retirees represent 293 years of service to the Westbrook students and community. We will miss each and every one of you and wish you happiness and longevity in your retirement years.
