Annually, the Portland Water District flushes its water mains. This practice, which flows water through water mains at a high velocity in the opposite direction of the natural flow, helps ensure the water that is delivered to your tap is clean and fresh. During flushing, any sediment that may be in the mains is released out the hydrants.
On April 24, the District will begin the annual task of cleaning its 950 miles of water mains. In an effort to reduce customer inconveniences, crews will work from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., Sunday through Thursday. They will begin on Portland’s Western Prom and in South Portland (Highland Ave, Cottage Rd, Sawyer St, Broadway, Ocean St, and Waterman Dr area). For more detail on the location of crews, please visit our web site at www.pwd.org.
Customers may notice short periods of water discoloration; however, this program is essential to maintain water quality and public health.
Please be advised, PWD employees will work at night and drive white vans with the District name and logo clearly displayed. Employees also carry an I.D. card, and should have no reason to access any residential home.
If customers experience any change in water quality following maintenance activities or have security concerns regarding District employees, please call 761-8310.
