Reitze marched
World War II soldier Ray Reitze marched with veterans in Portland’s ticker tape parade on Friday, honoring the state’s soldiers who served in Iraq.
Reitze was taken prisoner of war by German forces on Feb. 14, 1943, in North Africa. Among his memorabilia, Reitze has a telegram that his mother received from the Vatican. The Secretary of State to his Holiness sent a message home from Reitze, who had been visited by two priests, that he was “safe and sound in transit camp.”
Reitze moved to Buxton in 1946.
