The Cape Elizabeth Wind Symphony has commissioned an original composition by Thomas Bourgault, a master’s candidate at the University of New Hampshire.
Bourgault, a Biddeford resident, has visited Cape Elizabeth High School to rehearse with the symphony and will conduct the premiere on Thursday, April 7, at the school.
“Scherzo,” the title of Bourgault’s original composition, “is an energetic and exciting piece,” said Tom Lizotte, the school’s band director, in an e-mail to the Current. “It is demanding music, but very audience accessible. The students have very much enjoyed the collaboration with Tom.”
Bourgault was a student of Lizotte’s at Biddeford High School, where he composed several pieces that the band performed. Bourgault studied composition as a high school student with Ed Roseman in the regional fine arts collaborative the high schools in that area have.
The idea for the commission came up when Bourgault and Lizotte were talking last year. They discussed several ideas, and Bourgault started writing, Lizotte said.
Lizotte said this is the second piece commissioned for the CEHS Wind Symphony. Last spring they premiered “Maine Scape,” which is a three-part piece composed by Jay Kennedy, a vice president at Berklee College of Music in Boston.
The Cape jazz groups have also commissioned pieces in the past from Terry White, a Cape Elizabeth Middle School teacher.
