Scarborough police: House breaks away

3 min read

No one was hurt after a trailer carrying parts of a pre-fabricated house broke away from the truck towing it on Gorham Road March 10.

“The trailer came off and looked to go past me,” said driver Robert Owens of J.P. Brown Transport. “So I cut the truck into it and stopped it.”

The trailer was carrying dormers and roofing sections from State Manufactured Homes on Route 1 to a building site on Mitchell Hill Road when the trailer disconnected from the truck. A chain meant to act as a backup connection also broke away, shearing off where it was welded to the truck’s body.

The trailer swerved into the oncoming lane, where a few cars were heading its way. The driver of the first car swerved off the road into the snowbank, which stopped the car just inches from a telephone pole.

And a car parked behind the Bull Moose music store also had a $185 driver’s window broken and a $100 stereo stolen. South Portland police told Scarborough police that two other cars were also broken into in the same area that night, according to Scarborough Detective Sgt. Rick Rouse.

Two refrigerators and two stoves, worth a total of $3,100, were stolen from two display units on the sales lot at State Manufactured Homes on Route 1 March 9. The thefts also did $200 in damage to a linoleum floor in a bathroom of one of the units.

Striking it rich, part 1

Five lottery scratch tickets were reported stolen at 2:47 p.m. March 9 from the Cumberland Farms on Route 1. A clerk told police two white men who were about 25 years old came into the business and asked for help locating a particular brand of beer. The clerk went into the cooler with one of the men, while the other waited near the cash register, according to Detective Sgt. Rick Rouse. When the clerk and the man came out of the cooler, both customers left quickly. The clerk noticed the tickets were missing shortly thereafter.

Striking it rich, part 2

At 3:36 p.m. March 9, about 45 minutes after five scratch tickets were reported stolen, someone tried to redeem stolen lottery tickets at the Hannaford supermarket. The tickets were not honored, and the person who had them had left before police arrived. Police did not know whether the people or the tickets were the same as those stolen from the Cumberland Farms.

Is it worth it?

On March 10 Wal-Mart store officials turned over to police five counterfeit bills collected at the store over the past six months. One of the bills was a $100 bill, but the others were in smaller denominations: $20, $10, $5 and $1.

Beamed up?

A shoplifter stole a copy of the SpongeBob SquarePants movie and a Star Trek DVD box set March 10. The items’ total value is $103.

Odd man out

A man was seen standing on the road near the Toddle Inn on Lincoln Avenue, smoking a cigarette and leaning against his truck. When someone asked him what he was doing, he said he had driven from Portland and was “giving the truck a rest.” The man moved on when asked to.
