The Scarborough Rotary Club has named the Students of the Quarter for the second quarter.
Carrlyn Bathe, daughter of Barbara and Frank Bathe, has received a Special Recognition Award. Bathe is a junior at Scarborough High School and was nominated by her teacher Jim Watson for her spectacular improvement in her grades since the fourth quarter of last year. Bathe increased her average grade by 30.4 points by increased work ethic and effort.
Paul Chiacantona, son of Diane and Michael Chiarantona, is the Student of the Quarter at Scarborough Middle School, where he is in eighth grade. The teachers of the Algonquin Team nominated him, writing, “Paul is one of the most civically involved and caring students I have ever encountered. He is a member of the Civil Rights Team and consistently volunteers for countless subcommittees within the team. He is the president of the Builders Club. He speaks publicly for both groups to the school and lead teachers with passion and clarity. He stands up for those who cannot or are unable to speak up for themselves. In the classroom, he is the first to help others in caring genuine manner. He’s enthusiastic about everything he does and loves to take up a challenge. It is no problem for him to take on everything that comes his way with a smile. He maintains an ‘A’ average in spite of being so busy and giving so much of himself to others. He has a fantastic sense of humor, listens well to his peers and leads by example.”
Queenie Li, daughter of Niao Li, is the sophomore Student of the Quarter at Scarborough High School. Li was nominated by teachers Leah Zuch and Sarah Ellsworth. Li arrived from China in seventh grade and has shown tremendous courage, motivation and determination adapting to this new language and culture. Li has made amazing progress in English proficiency in only three and a half years. She deserves recognition and honor for all of her hard work, extensive studying and consistent motivation that has made her a very successful student taking all regular content area classes and receives between three and four hours of (English as a Second Language) each week. Her GPA is 91.2 percent, a wonderful accomplishment. Li is very mature and shows great care and concern for others, and is always ready to help her fellow students, especially in math.
Sarah Slagle, daughter of Pinky and John Slagle, is the senior Student of the Quarter at Scarborough High School. She was nominated by teacher Gerald Hebert, who wrote, “I have known Sarah for two years. When another teacher and I took charge of the school’s Pride Committee, Sarah came forward to help us organize. In addition, she volunteered to be the announcer on the intercom for students who earned Pride Recognition. Sarah is also the newspaper editor and its original organizer. As a member of my advanced senior English class, Sarah is a ready contributor during class discussions. In addition, her work ethic and positive attitude add much to the class atmosphere. I have also seen her at soccer games for which she made signs to show support for our teams. Sarah is an all-around school contributor. Her energy and enthusiasm add volumes to make our school the community it is. I enthusiastically endorse her for this award.”
