ALTOONA, Pa. — Four Altoona pitchers combined on a three-hitter, and the Curve capitalized on 10 walks to beat the Portland Sea Dogs 8-0 in the opener of their three-game series Friday.
Teddy Stankiewicz (1-3) took the loss despite allowing just five hits and two runs in six innings.
Altoona broke through against Stankiewicz with a two-out rally in the second inning. Edwin Espinal singled to center, Stetson Allie drew a walk, and Barrett Barnes drove home both runners with a double to center.
David Whitehead (2-4) limited the Sea Dogs to two singles through the first five innings. He escaped a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the third, retiring Sean Coyle (strikeout) and Andrew Benintendi (flyout).
Dovydas Neverauskas (two innings), Josh Smith and Montana DuRapau finished the shutout.
The Curve broke the game open with six runs in the eighth against Simon Mercedes and Chandler Shepherd. The inning included five walks, a hit batsman, an error, and only one hit.
