Two 14-year-old girls were found safe early Friday morning after they became separated from their hiking group and spent part of the night outdoors in Gulf Hagas, a gorge in central Maine.

The two were part of a school leadership program at Camp Jordan in Ellsworth.

According to the Maine Warden Service, the two were discovered missing after the hiking group returned at about 6:30 p.m. Thursday. The camp said the two had been accounted for at the midpoint of the hike.

Counselors began to search for them and the Maine Warden Service was called in. The girls were found by a group of wardens from Greenville at 1:15 a.m. Friday about 1.5 miles from the trailhead.

The girls said they became separated from the other hikers, tried to locate their group and then decided to stop on the trail. The Warden Service said that made it easier to find the girls, who were a little cold but unhurt.
