I want to make policies accessible, transparent, understandable and in plain language, and support a strong and healthy school culture where students and staff feel heard, included, and valued. I’ll evaluate each policy decision by asking: How does this work for students? How does it work for families? How does it work for educators? Who benefits, who has access, and who may be left out? “What is best for the kids?”

Why are you running?

As a dad, coach, former district employee and husband of a teacher, I’ve seen education from several angles. I’m running to bring a fresh perspective and a willingness to ask difficult questions. Our community and schools are changing, and our policies should change with them. I’ll listen to students, families, and teachers to improve my understanding of their needs in order to help make thoughtful, long-term decisions to help build a school system that serves today’s community.

What is the biggest challenge facing your area’s schools? The biggest opportunity?

Our biggest challenge is adapting to a changing world while supporting kids, families, and educators. That includes successfully implementing Maine’s “Bell to Bell, No Cell” law. Also challenging is using ai responsibly and ethically across the district. AI is a powerful tool, and our biggest opportunity is to educate everyone on its responsible use and incorporate it into learning while protecting focus, creativity, and academic integrity.

A top issue for many parents is the age of Maine’s school infrastructure. How would you address this issue locally from your position on the school board?

I would first listen to families, staff, and the broader community, then support a transparent process for identifying and prioritizing needs. We should evaluate safety, accessibility, urgency, and the impact on kids and the people that work with them. I would advocate for a responsible approach to long-term planning rather than repairs done in haste, learn from the past, keep the community informed and involved. We need to make decisions that serve students today and for generations to come.

Do you think the state government is too involved in local schooling? Not involved enough? The right amount of involved? Explain your answer.

The state is involved at about the right level when it provides clear guidance without micromanaging our local schools. “Bell to Bell, No Cell” can create consistency and relieve pressure on the teachers, but input from the district is essential to implementation, clear expectations, routines, and restorative approaches for violations. Each district has different needs. The best balance is statewide support, meaningful local flexibility, and accountability for doing what is best for kids.

Scarborough parent of two middle school aged daughters, longtime youth coach and former school district employee, fierce advocate for kids, supporting accessibility, inclusion, and transparency.
BA in Psychology - U of Me.
