Top Three Priorities
Fostering a healthy community, supporting diverse types of achievement and managing the opportunities and issues evolving with technological changes available to our students and schools.
Why are you running?
We are changing so fast, but the nature of people is slow to change. We must help students adjust to a dynamic changing world with successful adaptations to evolving opportunities in their futures.
What is the biggest challenge facing your area’s schools? The biggest opportunity?
Gorham is growing rapidly, even outpacing the projections. Welcoming more students and enhancing already wonderful systems to support development and growth will require creative and strategic planning. This growth is also our biggest opportunity; with a larger school system we foster more opportunities for broadening our offerings to meet each child where they start and prepare them to shine.
A top issue for many parents is the age of Maine’s school infrastructure. How would you address this issue locally from your position on the school board?
Gorham is doing a wonderful job of working with its schools to fund the most pressing needs first and pace the maintenance appropriately to prevent future lags between large projects and the necessary upkeep of existing structures and resources. Gorham will continue adapting to new standards while introducing new technologies and restoring historic buildings.
Do you think the state government is too involved in local schooling? Not involved enough? The right amount of involved? Explain your answer.
This is a question of allocation and precision. State involvement is the structure we begin with, and it is our task to work with that framework and to adjust where needed when necessary. This will always need adjustment based on the issues of the day. This is our ongoing task, to keep the involvement updated and relevant for our current needs.
