First time running for office

Top Three Priorities

My top three priorities are supporting our deputies with strong leadership, training, and the resources needed to do their jobs safely and effectively; addressing illegal drugs and mental health challenges through enforcement and collaboration with community partners; and strengthening relationships between the sheriff’s office and the people we serve. Being visible, accessible and responsive to our communities while maintaining transparency and accountability will be central.

Why are you running?

I am running for sheriff because Hancock County is my home, and I want to continue serving the people and communities I know so well. After 31 years with the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office and continuing my career as a detective with the Ellsworth Police Department, I know the job and understand its responsibilities. I believe my experience, leadership and knowledge of Hancock County have prepared me to provide steady, effective leadership as sheriff from day one.

What is the biggest challenge facing your town/county? The biggest opportunity?

Meeting the growing and changing public safety needs of our communities with limited staffing and resources. Law enforcement is increasingly responding to complex situations involving substance use, mental health and other community needs. Addressing these challenges requires adequate staffing, strong leadership, effective training, and continued collaboration with other agencies and community partners to ensure residents receive the services and support they need.

If you could change one thing about how the town/county functions, what would it be and why?

I would place greater emphasis on collaboration. No department or leader can effectively serve the county by working in isolation. I believe in building relationships, listening to different perspectives, and finding common ground to get things done. Throughout my career, I have worked successfully with people and agencies across our communities, and I would bring that same cooperative approach to county government.

Do you support more development – i.e. more housing construction and business building in your town/county? Why or why not?

I support responsible growth that benefits the people who live and work in Hancock County. We need more housing opportunities and a strong local economy, but development should also fit the needs and character of our individual communities. Growth brings additional demands on roads, public safety and other local services, so planning is important. I believe we can encourage housing and business development while making sure local communities have a voice in how that growth takes place.
