Top Three Priorities

1. Attending to the concerns and goals of all community and school stakeholders with an open mind. 2. Serving the community and schools with transparency and integrity. 3. Contributing in a meaningful way to the continuing support of our schools to ensure success for all students.

Why are you running?

Having spent nearly four decades as a Maine public school teacher and counselor, I understand what it takes to help students thrive. As a retired educator and grandparent of two current students, I am running for school board to achieve three clear goals: maximize student resiliency, support our educators and ensure every school has the resources needed to deliver educational excellence for all families.

What is the biggest challenge facing your area’s schools? The biggest opportunity?

Like most communities, ours faces the challenge of adequetely funding public education. Creating a balanced budget that maintains quality staffing, academic programs and infrastructure is critical, and it requires broad community support. To achieve this, we must continually engage all residents, including those without children in the schools. Our opportunity moving forward is to build on the successful communication strategies that helped pass our recent building referendum.

A top issue for many parents is the age of Maine’s school infrastructure. How would you address this issue locally from your position on the school board?

I support the school board's current infrastructure goal. Moving forward, my focus will be on project oversight – ensuring the new middle school is built on time and on budget; long-term planning – maintaining a sustainable plan for ongoing school maintenance; and collaboration – partnering closely with the town council and building committees.

Do you think the state government is too involved in local schooling? Not involved enough? The right amount of involved? Explain your answer.

I believe state involvement is currently adequate, but the level of state financial support needs to increase.
