YARMOUTH — The fourth-seeded Yarmouth Clippers used a sturdy defense and an aggressive offensive attack to shut out the 12th-seeded Fryeburg Academy Raiders 3-0 in a girl’s Class B South quarterfinal on Tuesday.
The Clippers, who dominated time of possession in the contest, didn’t waste offensive or defensive opportunities throughout the game.
“From start to finish we controlled the ball, controlled play,” Yarmouth Coach Rich Smith said. “We had a lot of good combination passing. We played hard and tough.”
Fryeburg’s only legitimate scoring opportunity came with 12 minutes to play in the first half when it received three consecutive corners but was denied by Yarmouth’s defense each time.
Yarmouth completely controlled the ball the first 20 minutes of the game, but was unable to score until sophomore Sara D’Appolonia broke away from the defense and put it in the net with 6:13 left to play in the half.
“In the first half, (Fryeburg) was holding back and putting a lot of numbers forward,” Smith said. “It allowed our defense to push up, pin them in and not allow them many chances.”
Yarmouth doubled its lead three minutes later when midfielder Gretchen Barbera scored on a feed from junior Katie Clemmer.
The Clippers didn’t waste time adding to their lead to start the second half.
Clemmer stole the ball on the Fryeburg side of the field and immediately punched it into the net 45 seconds into the second half to make it 3-0.
With the three-goal cushion, Yarmouth’s defense did the rest.
“The defense has been solid all year, with Lily Watson and Lauren Bartlett,” Smith said of his seniors. “They cover for each other, they back each other up. A solid effort all the way around in the back.”
The Clippers will play Greely on Saturday afternoon in the semifinals. Greely shut out Lincoln Academy 7-0 on Tuesday.
“We’re going to have to play our best game Saturday,” Smith said.
“We’ll be at the top of our game.”
