CAPE ELIZABETH — Cape Elizabeth’s boys’ lacrosse team continues to live up to the hype as the best squad in the state.
After an emphatic 15-goal victory at two-time reigning Class A champion Thornton Academy on Tuesday, the Capers faced another big test Saturday at Hannaford Field against rival Falmouth. But Cape dominated at both ends of the field and produced another impressive win.
Archie McEvoy scored four goals, Colin Campbell added three, and the defense held Falmouth scoreless for more than 25 minutes in one stretch as Cape Elizabeth rolled to a 14-5 victory.
“I don’t know if we’re doing it with flying colors, but we’re passing the tests,” said Capers Coach Ben Raymond. “At times today, we did really, really well. We made good decisions moving the ball and our defense played great.”
Falmouth, which also entered the game undefeated, took an early 1-0 lead on a goal from Kurt Robaczewski. But in a span of just over a minute, Campbell, McEvoy and Keegan Lathrop beat Falmouth goalie Drew Noyes (16 saves) to put Cape Elizabeth (9-0) ahead to stay.
Falmouth (8-1) drew within 3-2 with 4:32 left in the first quarter when Wyatt Kerr produced the first of his three goals but didn’t score again until well into the second half.
The Capers got a goal from Tiernan Lathrop late in the first quarter, then broke it open in the second. McEvoy scored after a nice fake, Oskar Frankwicz added a goal and Campbell scored twice for an 8-2 halftime advantage.
“No one is selfish, we just want to win,” McEvoy said. “When we move the ball like that, it’s tough to stop us.”
Tiernan Lathrop scored 15 seconds into the third quarter and Caden Lee added another before Satchel Kaplan ended Falmouth’s long scoreless drought.
“We’ve really focused on communication and on our slides on defense,” said Cape Elizabeth senior defenseman Gavin Simopoulos. “When we get tested on defense, we know we’re up for the challenge. We’re having so much fun.”
“I don’t know if I expected we’d be this good, but we’ve bonded together,” added McEvoy. “We kept saying (this week) was where the real season starts, playing some teams we’ll see down the line.”
Falmouth Coach Dave Barton hopes his team will get another chance to play Cape Elizabeth. A rematch could only take place in the Class A final next month.
“(Cape) just outplayed us in every facet, but I’m proud of how my group competes,” Barton said. “We just weren’t going to beat them the way they played today.
“This is what we wanted. We’ll learn from this and we’ll get better.”
