After finishing six shots shy of a Class A state title last year, the Cheverus golf team will go into this year’s tournament with plenty of momentum.

Led by Mick Madden’s 73 and a 74 from Sam Sirois, the Stags shot a collective 22-over 310 to hold off Falmouth by four shots at the SMAA qualifier at Natanis Golf Course in Vassalboro.

Joe Mancini (80) and Garrett Thees (83) also had scoring rounds for Cheverus, which was second to Scarborough at the state tournament last year. Falmouth (314), which finished first at the qualifier last year, was led by Dante Iannetta’s co-medalist round of 2-under 70, and also got contributions from Alex Novick (78), Clayton Casey (79) and Ryan Holdredge (87).

Greely’s Joe Hansen also shot 70 to share the top score with Iannetta. The two tied for medalist honors at the qualifier last year.

The top third of teams from the 18-team field also qualified for the state tournament, a list that also included Thornton Academy (329), Gorham (330), Scarborough and Massabesic (349). The Golden Trojans were led by Ruven Weber (81), Austin Cook (82), and Beck Edgerly and Blake Bolduc (83 each), while Gorham got a 79 from Jackson Altham, an 81 from Eli Castles, and 85s from Graham Staples and Will Provost.

Scarborough was led by Brett Kemper (82), and Massabesic was paced by Emmett Carroll and Ethan Roy (84 each).

MVC QUALIFIER: Drew Mertzel led the Winthrop golf team to a first-place finish at the Mountain Valley Conference qualifier Monday at Natanis Golf Course in Vassalboro.

The freshman earned medalist honors by shooting a 2-under 70. The Ramblers earned a berth into the Class C state championship Saturday as a team with a score of 334. Also for Winthrop, Lincoln MacArthur shot 80, followed Sam Corgan (87) and Kay Allarie (97).

Rival Monmouth also reached the state championship with a score of 334. Kyle Bryant shot an 80, followed by Patrick Murphy (81), Levi Laverdiere (86) annd Ostin Stevens (87).

Maranacook, led by Ethan Chilton with an 80, also qualified for states with a 338. Also for the Black Bears, Josh Herzing shot 84, Grady Henderson 86 and Jacob Lyons 88.

Chris Johnson of Kents Hill finished second with a 77 to qualify individually. Teammates Liam Ross (79) and Ben Harriman (89) also qualified.

Evan Bilodeau of Winthrop went to the qualifier as an individual and and finished third with a 78.

Dirigo had two players qualify individually with Clark Averill (85) and Vince Chapman (88). Madison also had a pair in Colton Pelletier (85) and Brayden Furbush (87). Mt. View’s Cole Gerrish shot 87 to qualify as well.

FIELD HOCKEY

BIDDEFORD 7, NOBLE 2: Mia Mariello had two goals and an assist to lift the Tigers (6-1-2) past the Knights (5-5) in Biddeford.

Addison Barrs and Rachel Lagasses each added a goal and an assist, while Emily Hussey, Laken Mills and Kayla Magnant each added a goal.

Maddie Thompson scored twice for Noble.

FRYEBURG ACADEMY 2, GREELY 1: Aspen Hazlewood knocked in a centering pass from Sophia Brown with 1:51 remaining in the second overtime to lift the Raiders (2-7) over Greely (3-4-2) at Fryeburg.

After Helen Zimmerman scored from Grace Tyll for Greely with 9:57 left in the first period, Ella Dean of Fryeburg tied it from Sharis Santos with 9:26 to play in the third.

Camryn Esposito of Greely and Brennan Slosberg of Fryeburg had nine saves each.

GIRLS SOCCER

WELLS 3, GRAY-NEW GLOUCESTER 2: Eva Talevi had two goals, Isla Collins also scored and the Warriors (3-6) edged the Patriots (1-6-2) in Gray.

Samantha Woodward had three saves for Wells.

Ashley Anderson and Ida Waterman each had a goal and an assist and Mallory Hardiman made eight saves for the Patriots.
