Here’s a look at some of the games that will provide interesting matchups or could shake up the standings this year:

Cheverus at Biddeford, Sept. 5: The Tigers played the Stags three times last fall, dropping all three, with the third showdown in the Class A South final. Have they passed the defending champion, or is Cheverus still the team to beat? The season opener will provide an instant answer, but there’s also a rematch looming on Oct. 3.

York at Mt. Ararat, Sept. 11: York frequently draws intriguing interconference matchups, and this is no exception. The Wildcats, a Class B team from the Western Maine Conference will get to test themselves against a Mt. Ararat team that is looking to compete for a top-five spot in Class A North and the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference. The Eagles will see how well their underclassmen-heavy team holds up against a well-coached York squad.

Thornton Academy at Gorham, Sept. 19: This could be a crossroads point for a Trojans team looking to crack the top four in Class A South. Thornton faces Biddeford and Cheverus within its first five games, then immediately draws an annually strong Gorham team. A win would show the Trojans are for real. A Gorham win would show the Rams haven’t fallen from their position as one of the region’s top three.

Gorham at Biddeford, Oct. 1: These teams have been in each other’s way constantly over the past two seasons, meeting five times, including twice in the postseason. Biddeford has gotten the best of Gorham of late, winning the past four. They meet on Sept. 9 and Oct. 1, and this latter matchup will likely carry major Heal point ramifications.

Freeport at Yarmouth, Oct. 20: The past two Class B South champs, who enter this season as favorites again, meet for the first time in Freeport on Oct. 6, but their clash in the season finale could very well come with the No. 1 seed in the region at stake. This will be under the lights at 6 p.m., and given their 1-0 overtime result in the regional final last year, a tight battle is probable.
