Bar and restaurant Silver Street by Taj, a sister operation to South Portland’s popular Taj Indian Cuisine, is slated to open Thursday.
The beverage-forward venue — located at 35 Silver St., the former home of The North Point — is being launched by partners Sai Guntaka, owner of Taj, and Taj’s beverage director, Jim Baldi. Cody Brann will be Silver Street’s beverage director.
Guntaka said Silver Street’s craft cocktails are meant to be reasonably priced, ranging from $8-$14, and include drinks like a riff on an Old Fashioned with honey and fresh herbs and such Indian-inflected drinks as a hibiscus-infused margarita. Silver Street by Taj will also offer wines curated by Baldi and a selection of local beers, featuring some brewed specifically for Silver Street, like the Silver Street Pilsner from Oxbow Brewing Company, and the Talwar IPA from Bissell Brothers.
For the first week, Guntaka said Silver Street’s food menu will offer a rotating selection of two entrées made at Taj, one meat and one vegetarian, like butter chicken or saag paneer. The dishes will be served over rice with greens, or as tacos in fresh-pressed corn tortillas. Silver Street will introduce new menu items in September, including samosas and sweets such as crème brûlée, and Indian affogato with Tandem espresso and house-made Indian kulfi ice cream.
As Taj does, Silver Street will donate a portion of profits to help feed the local homeless, Guntaka said.
Silver Street seats up to 40 people, including a 10-seat bar. Guntaka expects the space will be particularly popular with a younger crowd and people on date nights. “It’s cozy and dark, with very modern and classy vibes,” he said. “It’s a beautiful space.”
Silver Street by Taj will be open seven days a week from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m.
