A major water main break on Broadway in South Portland early Tuesday morning is expected to cause traffic delays for at least 24 hours.
At 4:09 a.m., the section of the water main between Main and Lincoln streets ruptured, causing rushing water on the road and traffic delays for morning commuters, according to South Portland police. Because Broadway is a main thoroughfare for the city, police estimates that traffic delays will continue to impact the area.
The police said that because of the significant soil erosion on Broadway, it could take up to two days before the roads are completely cleared.
The Portland Water District, which became aware of the break by 7 a.m., said that about 30 customers experienced low water pressure as a result of the break. It estimated that water should be returned by 5 p.m.
The cause of the break is still unknown.
