George Jaime died Thursday morning, according to a release from the Maine Department of Corrections. He was sentenced to 40 years in prison after a jury found him guilty of killing his girlfriend.

The body of the victim, Starlett “Star” Vining, was never found. She stopped coming to work in 1998 and wasn’t reported missing until eight years later, according to Associated Press coverage of the court proceedings. Jaime was the owner of a pawn shop in Presque Isle at the time.

The Maine Department of Corrections would not release Jaime’s cause and manner of death, “which is a standard practice at this stage of the process,” a spokesperson for the department said in an email on Friday.
