Portland police arrested a man Saturday night after an hours-long search prompted a lockdown at the University of New England campus.

The department’s Special Reaction Team responded to the wooded area off Bishop Street at 4:38 p.m. after someone reported a man had fired multiple gunshots. The UNE campus was put in lockdown out of precaution, police said, and residents were asked to stay in their homes.

Police made an arrest around 9:30 p.m of the suspect, who had been experiencing a mental health crisis earlier in the day according to police. The suspect was then transported for a mental evaluation, and no charges have been filed at this time.

An alert posted on the school’s website around 9:40 p.m. said the lockdown had been lifted.

Investigators asked that anyone who has information that might help in the case to call 207-874-8575 or text keyword PPDME and your message to 847411.
