The Maine Art Gallery’s summer classes begin the second week in July, and the deadline to sign up for the first class is Monday, June 30.

Classes will be led by experienced instructors ready to help students dive into a new artistic medium or enhance skills in their favorite techniques. All classes are held in the gallery, and space is limited.

• Plein Air Pastel and Mixed Media with Jude Valentine, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 7-8. Do you have a box of soft pastels that you never use or perhaps you work in another medium but want to jazz things up a bit? Bring your pastels and your willingness to experiment to this hands-on workshop where we will combine soft pastel with acrylic, watercolor or gouache, or a combination of all three. We’ll experiment with techniques for landscape and still life compositions. MAG member $180, non-member $190. Adults only. Signup deadline is June 30.

• Discover Your Inner Artist with Kat Logan, July 14, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a break for lunch. This workshop is designed specifically for those who believe they can’t draw. In just one day of artistic exploration, you’ll learn to see the world through an artist’s eyes and allow your pencil to flow freely. All materials will be provided. MAG member $110, non-member $120. Adults only. Signup deadline is July 10.

• Exploring Watercolor: The 3 Layer Method with Deena Ball, July 21. This day includes two separate classes that may be combined, 9 a.m. to noon and 1-3 p.m. Beginners welcome. In each three-hour workshop, you’ll master the three-layer method of watercolor painting. This approach helps you simplify landscapes by focusing on shapes and values. You’ll learn essential watercolor skills including composition, brush techniques, water-to-paint ratio control, color mixing and material selection. Each session, MAG member $65, non-member $70. Adults only. Signup deadline July 17.
