High school grads hear inspiring messages

The 148th Westbrook High School class of graduates received diplomas in commencement exercises June 7 at Merrill Auditorium in Portland.

Katy Rice, vice chair of the Westbrook School Committee, told graduates to be proud of their accomplishments. “We are so proud of you,” Rice said.

Co-Principal Patrick Colgan challenged the class to choose what is hard. “There is no ceiling above you,” Colgan said.

Rotarians to meet

Christine Johnson, secretary for the Westbrook-Gorham Rotary, announced the club will meet at 11:30 a.m. for lunch on Tuesday, June 17, in the Oak Room at Westbrook Community Center, 426 Bridge St.

Mark and Patti Swett will lead a tour of Westbrook Historical Society. No Rotary meeting is scheduled for June 24.

Summer days

The last day of school for the year will be on Friday, June 13, with dismissal at 10:15 a.m. at the middle high school; 10:25 a.m. at the high school; and 11:25 a.m. at the elementary schools.

50 years ago

The American Journal reported on June 11, 1975, that a crowd “spilled out into the corridor and the Spring Street entrance” when the City Council met. The agenda included a meeting with the Urban Renewal Authority and its executive director, Marc Guimont.
