A water main break shut down the westbound lanes of Brighton Avenue for several hours on Thursday evening.

Michelle Clements, a spokesperson for the Portland Water District, said the break began around 2:40 p.m. and was restored by 7:15 p.m. Portland police asked the public to avoid the area near where the road crosses the Maine Turnpike while crews worked to repair the break.

Clements said the water main was only about 6 inches wide, so no customers were affected. There is no known cause at this time, she said.
