Biddeford-based The Garden Bar is opening a second location in South Portland this spring.

Located at 173 Ocean St., formerly occupied by Cafe Louis, the new 1,000-square-foot Garden Bar will be more than four times as big as the original design-your-own salad and bowl venue. Husband-and-wife team Lanai Monahan and Keith Castro first opened The Garden Bar in May 2023 in the Pepperell Mill Campus.

“I’ve been trying to get into the Portland area market for a while, and I live in Portland, too,” Monahan said. “I think Portland needs more fast-casual, affordable food for everyday meals.”

The South Portland location can seat up to 20 customers. The kitchen and its full hood system will allow them to expand the menu , to include wraps, new proteins like steak and fish, meatless options like tofu and falafel, and pasta as a salad or bowl base option.

“We’ll be able to strengthen the ingredient options while still staying true to what The Garden Bar is, which is customizable, super-fast, healthy food,” Monahan said.
