Scarborough police arrested a man at Walmart on Saturday afternoon who allegedly was carrying a firearm stolen from another community.
Shawn Small, 27, was arrested after police were notified that he was at the store with a stolen gun in his possession, police said in a statement.
Small resisted officers’ efforts to detain him and was handcuffed, police said. The suspected stolen weapon was found in Small’s bag, and he was taken to a hospital for a medical evaluation, police said.
Small will be held on a probation violation and charged with possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, refusing to submit to arrest and unlawful possession of scheduled drugs, police said.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
