SKOWHEGAN — Two people were arrested this week when police found more than a pound of fentanyl and other illicit drugs while executing a search warrant at a Canaan home, authorities said.
Garrett Cote, 24, and Rylee Spofford, 19, were arrested on charges that include aggravated trafficking and unlawful possession of scheduled drugs after officers with the Skowhegan Police Department, Maine State Police and Maine Drug Enforcement Agency executed a search warrant at the home Wednesday.
The investigation had begun earlier with a report of a stolen chainsaw, according to a statement posted Thursday to the Skowhegan Police Department’s Facebook page.
Skowhegan police Chief David Bucknam said in the statement that a search at the home on Hill Road resulted in the seizure of over 550 grams of fentanyl, 35 grams of cocaine, 2 grams of methamphetamine and over $1,200 in cash. Two milligrams of fentanyl can be considered a lethal dose, according to the federal Drug Enforcement Agency.
“This is a substantial hit on getting these lethal drugs off the street,” Bucknam said in the statement.
Cote was charged with receiving stolen property, unlawful possession of scheduled drugs, two counts of aggravated trafficking in scheduled drugs and multiple bail violations, Bucknam said. Spofford was arrested on charges of aggravated trafficking in scheduled drugs and unlawful possession of scheduled drugs.
Spofford was being held Friday at the Somerset County Jail on $25,000 cash bail. Bucknam said Cote was being held without bail at the jail but online records indicate he was no longer being held there Friday.
