Casey Skolfield singled home Brady Wintle with the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth inning, and Gorham reliever Malachi Scribner worked out of a jam in the bottom half as the Rams ended South Portland’s eight-game winning streak with a 2-1 baseball victory Thursday in South Portland.
Gorham’s Wyatt Nadeau and South Portland’s Andrew Heffernan each allowed only two hits through the first seven innings. But the Rams (9-5) put together three hits in the eighth against Heffernan, who struck out nine and walked none before leaving after 7 1/3 innings.
Nadeau also left with one out in the eighth, as Scribner recorded the final two outs. Nadeau struck out seven and walked five.
South Portland (11-3) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Heffernan scored after hitting a triple. Gorham tied it in the third on a infield hit by Skolfield and a two-out triple by Quinn Dillon.
BIDDEFORD 5, WINDHAM 3: Dom Smith’s two-run single to right in the top of the eighth inning gave the Tigers (6-8) a win over the Eagles (5-9) in Windham.
Smith finished with three hits and three RBI and picked up the win with 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. Jack Clark and Matt Gonneville each had two hits for Biddeford.
Wyatt Washburn drove in two runs and Cayden McCartney notched two hits for Windham, which fought back to force extra innings after falling behind 3-0.
FALMOUTH 11, CHEVERUS 3: The Navigators (11-3) scored four runs in the first and third innings, stole 13 bases and beat the visiting Stags (8-6) for their 13th straight victory.
Falmouth got three hits and two RBI from Tyler Simmons, four runs and four stolen bases from Ethan Hendry, two runs and two RBI from Jacoby Porter, and two RBI and four stolen bases from Mitch Ham. Eli Cowperthwaite struck out 10 in six innings to earn the win.
Brian Connolly hit a triple and scored twice for the Stags.
THORNTON ACADEMY 3, SCARBOROUGH 1: Josh Kopetski and Brayden Williams each had an RBI single and Owen Critchley scattered six hits as the Trojans (10-5) downed the Red Storm (10-4) at Scarborough.
Scarborough’s Erik Swenson gave up five hits and two earned runs while striking out six and walking four. Ashton Blanchette had a pair of hits for Scarborough.
WESTBROOK 2, PORTLAND 0: Ben Eugley pitched a three-hitter and drove in both runs with a two-out double in the fourth inning, leading the Blue Blazes (5-9) past the Bulldogs (2-13) at Hadlock Field.
Portland’s Sam Payne also went the distance, giving up eight hits.
KENNEBUNK 7, NOBLE 1: Isaac Jensen doubled, tripled and drove in three runs as the Rams (7-7) defeated the Knights (6-8) in Kennebunk.
Quinn MacDonald struck out 13 while pitching a four-hitter for Kennebunk. Max Andrews, Drew Sliwkowski and Timmy Teguis all got two hits.
Aidan O’Connor led Noble with a single and a double.
MARSHWOOD 10, BONNY EAGLE 1: Tyler Hussey pitched a four-hitter with 10 strikeouts, and Noah Fitzgerald led the offense with three hits and two RBI as the Hawks (9-5) rolled past the Scots (3-11) in Standish.
Liam Tiernan also drove in two runs.
Cam Marcello hit an RBI single for Bonny Eagle.
SANFORD 14, DEERING 2: Caden Fontaine hit a single, a triple and a home run as the Spartans (9-5) beat the Rams (0-14) in a five-inning game at Sanford.
Beckett Barlow and Ben Gill each had two hits, and Scott Long singled home two runs for Sanford, which broke the game open with a 10-run second inning.
Tavian Lature hit a two-run single for Deering.
SOFTBALL
GORHAM 11, SOUTH PORTLAND/WESTBROOK 10: Kaci Mollison ripped a bases-loaded double into the gap in the bottom of the seventh inning, capping a four-run rally that gave the Rams (11-4) a win over South Portland/Westbrook in Gorham.
Makayla Quintal and Mollison each got two hits for Gorham, which overcame a 6-0 deficit.
Ella Nickerson totaled three hits and Delaney Whitten hit a double and a triple for the Red Riots, who broke a 7-7 tie with three runs in the top of the seventh.
NORTH YARMOUTH ACADEMY 20, TRAIP ACADEMY 1: Sadie Morgan led the Panthers (14-1) with three RBI in a five-inning win over the Rangers (1-12) at Yarmouth.
Cami Casserly added three hits and two RBI, Brooklyn Goodman had two hits and two RBI, and Michala Wallace chipped in with a single and a double. NYA pitcher Lily Rawnsley recorded nine strikeouts.
Hannah Thorsen drove in Traip’s run.
MT. ARARAT 7, LEWISTON 4: Audrey Niles capped a seventh-inning rally with a three-run inside-the-park home run, lifting the Eagles (1-13) over the Blue Devils (2-12) in Lewiston.
Niles nearly had an inside-the-park homer in the fifth inning but was a thrown out at the plate, resulting in an RBI triple that gave Mt. Ararat a 3-0 lead. Earlier in the fifth, Kennedy Lampert hit a two-run homer.
Lewiston answered with four runs in the bottom of the fifth, aided by two errors.
GIRLS’ LACROSSE
KENNEBUNK 15, PORTLAND 4: Ivy Armentrout scored four goals and set up another, Ruby Sliwkowski tallied three goals and three assists, and the Rams (13-0) cruised to a win over the Bulldogs (8-4) at Kennebunk.
Mara Muse also finished with three goals.
Lucy Susen, Emily Seavey, Eliza Stein and Gabbie Harrigan scored for Portland.
GORHAM 14, WESTBROOK 4: Seven players scored goals for Gorham (7-4), led by Miranda Chasse with four, as the Rams defeated the Blue Blazes (2-9) in Gorham.
Logan Doughty, Ellie Gay, Natalie Miner and Kaitlyn Nichols all added two goals.
Brooklyn Thayer put in three goals for Westbrook.
