I am troubled by polling by the media that is creating what I believe to be a false impression of our current state of political affairs.
Specifically, one frequently sees two questions at the top of every poll: Is President Biden too old to run for reelection? And is our country headed in the right direction? As a lifelong Democrat and political activist, I do think that the president is too old to run for reelection, but I will enthusiastically endorse him and vote for him anyway.
Biden has gotten an admirable amount accomplished in his first term, despite constant ambushing from the right. As for the second question, I will add my tally mark to the majority of Americans who believe that our country is headed in the wrong direction, but not because of Joe Biden. In fact, President Biden is our primary hope of keeping the country headed in any kind of a sane direction.
My wish is that journalists would ask the questions in a better way, or perhaps ask different questions. The survey results indicating that the majority of Americans, including Democrats, believe that Joe Biden is too old to run for reelection and that our country is heading in the wrong direction do not tell the whole story. In fact, they tell the wrong story and are a disservice to helping the public to understand the underlying issues our country is facing.
