The Valentine bandit’s perfectly reliable annual display, and the shroud of mystery surrounding his identity for my 38 years in Portland, has been one of my favorite things about this wonderful place – something I loved to tell people about because it is unique, sweet and just fun.

From the photos I’ve seen of Kevin Farhman, it is easy, even for a stranger, to see the sweetness in his eyes, and I’ve loved reading about his big heart (“‘Driving force’ behind Portland’s Valentine’s Day Phantom dies,” April 23). As much as I hate to give up the mystery, it is only fitting that Kevin be remembered and honored for all he did for the rest of us. My condolences to his family and our community on this sad loss.
