A 17-year-old Brewer High School student died after falling about 25 feet near Otter Cliff at Acadia National Park on Friday.
The National Park Service said the boy was hiking with friends when he fell. Park rangers and the Bar Harbor police and fire departments responded to the reports of the incident around noon and recovered the body.
The teen was identified as Bryce Basso, a junior at Brewer High School, in an email sent to the community Friday afternoon by Principal Brent Slowikowski.
The park service said rangers and other first responders reached Basso where he fell and performed CPR but were unable to revive him. Otter Cliff is a popular rock climbing area.
The Maine Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is investigating the death, park officials said.
At about the same time, two separate bicycle crashes on the Park Loop Road caused injuries, the park service said. The road is scheduled to open to car traffic on Saturday.
Brewer High School will be open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday with counselors on hand to support students and staff, Slowikowski said.
