The South Portland Planning Department and Age Friendly South Portland will host a presentation on accessory dwelling units at 6:30 p.m. April 25 at the main branch of the public library.
The City Council passed an ordinance in November that permits accessory dwelling units, or ADUs, on single-family lots to align itself with state affordable housing laws that take effect later this year. ADUs are small housing units located on residential lots, often referred to as in-law apartments.
The Planning Department will provide information on the law change and how ADUs may become easier and more affordable to build.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
