Quinn McDaniel’s two-run homer to left field in the top of the ninth inning lifted Maine to a 2-1 win over UMBC in its America East conference baseball opener Friday in Baltimore.
Colin Fitzgerald allowed just one hit and two walks over seven innings while striking out seven for Maine (5-10, 1-0 America East). Caleb Leys got the win after pitching a scoreless eighth, and Justin Baeyens earned the save despite giving up a home run in the bottom of the ninth.
ROWAN 12, SOUTHERN MAINE 7: Karson Harcourt and Phil Sedalis each hit a two-run single during a six-run seventh inning that lifted the Profs (8-3) over the Huskies (1-7) in Auburndale, Florida.
Cam Seymour drove in two runs for USM, which grabbed a 7-6 lead with five runs in the sixth. Jason Komulainen had three hits and an RBI, and Tom Vesosky and Anthony Poole each contributed two hits and an RBI.
SMCC LOSES TWICE: Despite a three-run triple by Ryan Thurber in Game 1 and seven RBI by Dylan Sellinger in Game 2, the SeaWolves (0-2) were swept by Penn State Mont Alto (8-6) in Mont Alto, Pennsylvania.
Sellinger went 4 for 4 with two doubles in the second game, which SMCC lost 10-7. Thurber, Derek Hoh and Justin Colon each scored twice for the SeaWolves.
In the opener, Mont Alto got four runs in the bottom of the sixth to rally for a 9-6 win.
SOFTBALL
SOUTHERN MAINE SPLITS: Ella Bezanson and Rona Scott each had a pair of RBI, and Lauren Merrill and Belle Snyder combined on a three-hitter for USM (2-5) in a 6-1 win over Hamline (6-4-1) in Kissimmee, Florida.
Bezanson hit a two-run double in the fifth inning for a 5-0 lead. Scott drove in a run on a fielder’s choice in the first and hit a solo homer in the fifth. Madison Day added two hits, an RBI and a run scored.
In its second game of the day, USM (2-6) built a 5-0 lead before Amherst (8-2) rallied for a 6-5 win.
Mackenzie Renner hit a solo home run, and Kendall Migliorini, Lauren Merrill and Hannah Shields each belted an RBI double for USM.
MAINE SWEEPS: The Black Bears (6-16) used a four-run fifth inning to rally for an 8-5 win over Dartmouth (3-10) in Moraga, California.
Kennedy Priest and Caitlyn Fallon each had an RBI single for Maine.
Maine also picked up a 5-1 win over St. Mary’s (5-16), as Alysen Rieth pitched a five-hitter and Krista Francia drove in two runs.
BOWDOIN LOSES TWICE: Sydney Raddeman singled home Madison Palasz with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to cap a four-run rally as Carroll (7-9) earned an 8-7 win over Bowdoin (5-2) in Clermont, Florida.
Lilly Armstrong had three hits, three RBI and three runs for Bowdoin. J.K Bradley and Sydney Lang also produced three hits apiece.
Earlier, a third-inning home run by Angelina Mayers accounted for all the offense for Bowdoin in a 10-1 loss to Wisconsin-River Falls.
UNE LOSES TWICE: Despite three hits and three RBI by Abby Miner, the University of New England (2-7) lost 20-6 to Washington (Maryland) in a five-inning game in Kissimmee, Fla.
Earlier, the Nor’easters were held to two hits in a 16-0 loss to Amherst.
MEN’S LACROSSE
AMHERST 15, BATES 8: Jake Bennett had four goals and three assists as the Mammoths (2-1, 2-1 NESCAC) dominated the Bobcats (0-4, 0-3) in Owings Mills, Maryland.
Jake Johnson scored three goals, and Malcolm Klingbeil and Denzel Evans each finished with two for Bates.
