AUGUSTA — State Sen. Donna Bailey, D-Saco, welcomed the Thornton Academy girls swim team to the State House and presented a legislative sentiment to the coaches and swimmers March 9. This season, the team won the Southwestern Championship, which was the first conference championship in the program’s history. Previously, the Golden Trojans placed second at the conference championship in 2004 and 2010.
“With March being Women’s History Month, I was especially proud to welcome these strong, talented female athletes to the State House,” said Sen. Bailey. “After winning the Southwestern Championship, the girls went on to States and placed third — another great feat. I expect to see them again next year, after they defend their crown.”
In addition to the team winning the championship, swimmer Kenzie Lowry set a new school record in the 50 freestyle, and the relay team of Isabelle Rocheleau, Allie Lefebvre, Nora Freeman and Kenzie Lowry set a new school record in the 200 freestyle. The Golden Trojans are coached by head coach Kathy Leahy and assistant coaches Lynn Steward and Tommy Cote.
