President and CEO of Central Maine Power, Joe Purington sat down with Portland Press Herald CEO Lisa DeSisto for a conversation at The Roux Institute on Wednesday, March 1.
About Joe Purington
Joe Purington was appointed President and CEO of Central Maine Power (CMP) in September 2021. CMP serves approximately 646,000 electricity customers in an 11,000 square-mile service area in central and southern Maine. The appointment brings Purington home to Maine and to CMP where he began his career in utility operations.
Prior to rejoining CMP, Purington served as President of Eversource New Hampshire Operations where he was responsible for ensuring the safe and reliable delivery of electricity to more than 500,000 Eversource customers in New Hampshire. He also served as Vice President of New Hampshire Electric Operations at Eversource where he was responsible for overseeing transmission and distribution line, substation, and system operations organizations. He served as the incident commander for all large-scale power restoration efforts.
Prior to joining Eversource, Purington worked for CMP for 28 years in a range of operational roles, both in Maine, as well as for CMP’s sister companies in NY, New York State Electric & Gas and Rochester Gas and Electric. Purington served as Director of System Operations for Iberdrola USA (now AVANGRID) and was responsible for ensuring that all energy control centers and substation operations met all federal, regional, and state compliance and regulatory requirements. In addition, Purington served as incident commander for major power restoration efforts.
Purington also served as Director of Electric Distribution at CMP, managing the utility’s energy control center, leading all transmission and distribution system operations, and serving as incident commander for all large-scale power restoration efforts.
A Maine native, Purington earned a bachelor’s degree from Southern New Hampshire University and an associate degree from Southern Maine Vocational Technical Institute. He has now returned to Southern Maine and is actively engaging with communities and organizations that support Mainers statewide.
