As a longtime server at Becky’s Diner, I appreciate that Portland is known for its restaurants. But shouldn’t it also be known for its public schools? That’s why I’m voting “yes” on Question 5.

Right now, our city government isn’t structured to prioritize public education. We can and need to do better for Portland’s children and future.

Question 5 puts school budget decisions in the hands of the elected body that knows the needs of our students and schools. This is the model used in more than 90 percent of Maine communities and in communities all across the country. It works in those communities, and it will work in Portland. It will make our local government more democratic, efficient, accessible and accountable. And Portland’s kids deserve it.

Please join me in voting “yes” on Question 5.
