The Portland Little League 9/10 baseball all-stars won the state championship Friday, defeating Bangor, 8-3, in the title game in Westbrook. Portland went undefeated in three games in the double-elimination state tournament, with a 2-1 win over Bangor in its opener and a 13-8 win over Machias in game two. To advance to the state tournament, Portland won seven straight games in the District 6 tournament after losing its opener, including two straight one-run victories (3-2 and 6-5) over defending champion and previously undefeated Falmouth. Portland advances to the upcoming 8-10 Little League Eastern Regional Baseball Tournament in Cranston, Rhode Island.
Team members include Eli Peltier, David King, Louie Bechard, Charlie Armstrong, Lucas Nalli, David Rank, Simon Royle, James Minervino, Joey Salvaggio, Emmett O’Brien, Wesley Carlson, Mickey Mullen and Mason Roberts. The team is coached by Mark Peltier, Melvin Thomas, Ron Farr and Brian Bechard.
